The Pinnacle Awards are Cisco’s top recognition, honoring contributions furthering Cisco’s legacy of technical innovation. Velocity Impact Award winners, Next-Generation Platform for Cisco JDM Data, share their innovation.
SEAN PEGADO: JDM is one of the main manufacturing models that we have access to. One of the potential weaknesses of the JDM model is that lack of connection to data. We exchange two types of data with the JDMs. The first is manufacturing data about what's happening on the manufacturing line. The second main type of data we get is remanufacturing or returns or failure analysis data. We work with a variety of partners. It's not just one other company out there. It's multiple JDM partners. And each of them structures their data differently.
RAVI CHIKKAM: In the JDM model the systems at the JDM factory are completely owned by the JDM, so you do not-- you cannot write a command to pull the data directly from there. For this model to work, you need to have very good partnerships with the JDM. We've worked with each of the individual JDMs and their IT teams together to push the data from their systems into a public cloud, where we could go and fetch the data from a public cloud and move into our Cisco data warehouses.
SEAN PEGADO: So coming in, not only have we been able to get the data we need from JDMS, but also standardize it across them all.
XI WANG: Before we have the JDM data, we need to wait for JDM to generate report to us until we have it. It will be monthly or even quarterly. With JDM, data platform we'll be able to find the problems more quickly and more efficiently.
SEAN PEGADO: And we've been able to tie that all together in the platform, seeking things like put in a serial number and spit out everywhere it's been over its entire life, even though that's pulling information from six different systems. There's a lot of information that can be delivered at the single click of a button. It's not just cool. That's dollars difference. That's millions of dollars difference. We are a pretty small team. The team itself is, in full, five people. There's a lot of hard-earned wisdom and knowledge that this team has that was able to help us really work productively and quickly and navigate some really complicated problems. The JDM platform is not just a thing about data. It's about teams coming together to really build great products and make sure the products that we put out as a company don't feel like they're products made by seven different partners. They feel like they're products made by one company, by one Cisco.
